Summary

This position seeks a genetic counselor to join the Section of Hematology within the Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics. In this role, the genetic counselor will assist with seeing patients with hematologic conditions for which a genetic diagnosis is needed, determining genetic diagnoses of patients with hematologic disorders, and provide genetic counseling to patients and families. The genetic counselor will support all teams across hematology including patients with bleeding disorders as part of the Hemophilia Treatment Center and patients with inherited bone marrow failure conditions. 

Job Duties

• Assists in determining genetic diagnosis in patients with congenital hematologic disorders.
• Obtains complete and detailed family history to provide family counseling and guide family members through genetic testing, if applicable.
• Determines the optimal genetic panels/testing applicable to each patient, obtain insurance approval for the testing and, when necessary, provide prior authorization to obtain insurance approval (a timely process). Ensure families receive genetic testing kits if performed outside of clinic and inform on how to properly use the diagnostic kits.
• Primary person to obtain, interpret, and communicate the results of genetic testing within the Hematology Center once the genetic testing results.
• Coordinate with providers to interpret and counsel families on results, inform clinical teams of findings and significance, suggests follow up testing, if applicable.
• Submits requests to re-analyze previous genetic testing if any clinical/genetic updates are available.
• Assists and guides hematology-related genetic testing when needed on a hospitalized child.
• Provides in person genetic counseling to the various inherited hematologic disorders. Examples include, but are not limited to, bleeding disorders (Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease), Bone marrow failure (Telomere disorders, inherited bone marrow failure syndromes), Vascular disorders (Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia), Sickle cell disease and Thalassemia.
• Provides follow-up remote support to families when questions arise regarding results or need for genetic testing.
• Provides guidance and preparation for future children for families with inherited hematologic disorders, counseling to pregnant women in our Hematology Clinic.
• Attends weekly clinical hematology team meetings (hemostasis and thrombosis, bone marrow failure, etc.), answering pertinent clinical questions and interpreting genetic testing, as needed.
• Represents Hematology center at various clinical community events to provide educational support.
• Participates in Department-level Genetic Counselor meetings.
• Opportunities for mentoring genetic counselor trainees and students will be encouraged.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.
• No experience required.
• Board-eligible or Board Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
